Episode 3 --- Naomi Jackson

Naomi Jackson is so real and down-to-earth. It was a pleasure getting to know the first-time novelist a little bit at the Miami Book Fair this year.

Her critically acclaimed debut novel is The Star Side of Bird Hill. She has an MFA in creative writing from Iowa and an MA in creative writing from the University of Cape Town where she was a Fulbright scholar. Her undergraduate degree is from Williams College.

During this week's edition of the podcast, we discussed her experience being a first-time novelist, her always feeling like a "weirdo" and what book led her to read the Koran from cover-to-cover as a teenager.

Interview Highlights:

Naomi explains...

- Why her books will always be about "outsiderness"

- What she refuses to apologize for

- What she's given herself permission not to do
